Why I Love Winter

Yesterday Karen said she doesn’t understand why I like the snow so much.  That made me think. Why would anyone choose to be buried under many feet of snow with sub zero temperatures?  Here’s my answer:

For the beauty and stillness of a cold winter morning:

For days when darkness arrives at 4:00 p.m.

The way the snow seems to light up at night:

And the moon so visible in the frozen air:
For horses impatient to journey on snow covered trails.
For dogs dressed in coats who frolic with glee:
For Mountain Man who is always at work:
For the discovery of a bird’s nest left in the woods:
For leaving piles of snow to see how high they will go:
For a December sunset:
For the icy streams that run through the woods:
For snowstorms so big, you can’t get out the door:
And snowbanks piled high making perfect places to play:
For the first time the light shifts and lets you know Spring is on it’s way:

For the mud that appears signalling another winter’s end:

Nature’s cycle; so inexorably tied to life. Birth, growth, death, renewal.

That’s why I love winter.

Beautiful photos! Made me cold. But you are right those are all delightful reasons to love winter.

Is Mountain Man coming back to blade your roads? I would not be able to do the outside work if Terry wasn't there. I would just be there until spring comes.

Beautifully put. Many of those reasons are also why I like the change in seasons but the older I get the less and less I like to be cold! Snow and winterscapes do have a beauty like no other though.

snow is of another dimension, it is ethereal. I grew up with it and miss it sorely, we have a bit but not enough, I went to MT last week and had a taste, it just whet my appetite. ; ) Laura

Yes, winter sure does have its beauty! I think the worst part is if you have to travel in it! Other than that is can be a great time of year!

I adore snow and cold weather; am headed to Siberia to a children's orphanage in December and am looking forward to seeing the ice sculptures.
As to snow and cold, I can always add another layer but, in hot weather, once you get so nekkid, folks start to complain. -smile-

I love the snowy days, all bundled up, going out for a walk with the dog, when there is only that muted silence. Inside, I'm constantly looking out the windows, watching how it blankets the yard, inch by inch. I'll take the snow, anyday, over the mud season that follows.

Beautiful, and so easy to see why you love winter.
I, too, love the snow, but I abhor driving in it. Four more years til I can retire, then…let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

You showed the beauty of snow. But do you truely like the cold of it? What is the lowest temp it gets in the Vermont mountains?

Wow, looks like you covered just about everything! It seems you love winter for all the same reasons I do too, but I have one more reason to love winter and that is snowshoeing. I just can't get enough of it. There's just nothing like being out in the peacefulness of the woods where the only sound to break the silence is the singing of the chickadees. I can hardly wait till we have enough snow to go again this year.

Those pictures are gorgeous. I LOVE winter and I adore snow. I'm a Georgia girl so I don't see much of it and the only time I've see "real" snow was the few days I spent with my friends in Colorado. I was like a kid in a candy store! Oh how I wish I could see real snow every winter! Enjoy the rest of autumn and the return of winter!

As beautiful as those pictures are, I'm glad it's your home and not mine covered in all that snow. Nature does have a way of giving off a calmness though!
