One of the things I love about Vermont is the ever changing weather. Yesterday, it was still in the 50s and we had rare sunshine. Time for a hike in the pasture. I love the clouds that hang so low in the sky and the light that illuminates the surrounding mountains. It is never still.

There’s not much grass left and the horses, in search of the remaining spears, spread out and no longer graze in a group,

I try to capture the beauty of the ever changing light.

And give you an idea of just how close these clouds are to the top of the pasture.

And while I’m contemplating nature and the meaning of life, I encounter the more pragmatic Mountain Man hard at work on the barn renovations.

Early twilight sends us inside to enjoy the comfort of the wood stove on a rapidly cooling Northeast Kingdom night. When we wake up this morning, we are greeted by a light snowfall which bathes the sky in shades of cream and pink and grey.

An ever lower sun attempts to shine behind the snow clouds. I wonder if it will succeed.

I continue with my morning chores. As I take the horses from their stalls and lead them out, one tiny horse enjoys her first snowfall.

While turkeys and guineas resign themselves to eating from a seed block.

Tonight, it’s supposed to go down to 16 degrees. The chill of winter has finally arrived leaving only memories of warmth. But not to worry as one of my favorite verses comes to mind, “To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under Heaven.”
Thank you for visiting us today.

We just had our first snow fall here last week as well. We only got three inches but parts of Iowa got 10+ inches of snow. Of course it’s all disappeared now as the ground temperature is too warm for it stay around long. It gets into the 20s at night on a regular basis but continues to warm up to 50s during the daytime. I expect I’ll be cleaning up the yard from leaf fall one more time before all outside activity stops for me. My grandson loved the snow and can’t wait for the next one. Grandson and Grandpop are quivering in anticipation of sledding down the school yard hill. It’s been a couple years since we have been able to do that. Who says winter can’t be fun?
Have a great winter day.

I feel as I just spent the day with you on your mountain. Beautiful!!
In our corner of SD we have only had a few snowflakes-which has been more than enough for me!!!
Hope your soon-to-be-here grandchild will live close by so you can snuggle with it often!!!

Sounds like old man winter shows his face early in your neck of the woods.

Winters in the country are delightful. I miss country living.
On Karen Zemek’s blog, you mentioned that your dogs have never had fleas due to natural rearing. Could you elaborate sometime? I cannot use chemicals on my animals (nor do I want to), so I am very curious about your technique.
Have a good weekend.

Good Morning Mountain Woman!
Beautiful photo’s of your picturesque part of the world. I love them all but especially the ones of the pastures and mountains in the distance. I just noticed that in the picture of the barn wtih Mountain Man in the doorway…there is a transom window above the door? Or am I seeing things. I love your barn and it makes me miss ours…but it was nothing like your old barn which is lovely. We had rainy windy day the other day and then it turned to big flakes of slushy snow…it just melted as it touched the ground. We’ve only had a couple of frosty days but today will be 60 and they’re predicting 70 for Sunday. This is Kansas! Have a wonderful day…enjoy your farm. Maura

We’ll be splitting our time between the Finger Lakes and the Champlain Valley of VT. I love to follow life in the NE Kingdom – you and Mountain Man are hardy breed! I can’t wait to get some real snow (we haven’t had any appreciable snow here yet). Thanks for sharing. – Uncle Tractor at thebarnboard.blogspot.com

For a wondrous moment I was lost in the sheer beauty of the world that surrounds you in your mountain haven. Too lovely for words is the gift of God’s majesty and creation.
Snow is something we rarely see down here in southern Florida, we get the occasional frost and, even more rarely, a light mist of snow that seems to melt the moment it touches ground. It seems your flock, with their thick coats of down and feathers, are enjoying the winter weather.
Hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving … and I bet you ended up buying a turkey.
