Through A Zoom Lens

Most of the time, when taking pictures for the blog, I use a zoom lens. Perhaps I give you a distorted view. In actuality, one of things I love about our farm is the sense of vast, open space. Here’s how the horses looked this morning, dots in the left hand corner,

But zoom in and they become visible.

Zoom in some more and there they are.

It’s a matter of perspective. The big picture or the smaller details?
When June arrives, I start counting the days until fall. Many people love warm weather but I’m not one of them. As the thermometer plunges, my spirits rise. And what a summer we’ve had this year. Unseasonably hot and sunny days. None of our Vermont brisk mornings necessitating a fire nor the gray days so typical to the Northeast Kingdom. No, this summer has been especially crafted for sun worshipers. Until the other day. Finally, a morning in the 40s. I breathe a sigh of relief. Mountain Man grumbles.
“Ayyah (a sound unique to Vermonters), won’t be long now. Time to move the horses.” And so we performed our yearly ritual of taking the horses off the upper pasture and moving them closer to the barn.
I ventured out late in the afternoon. The shadows draw down the sun earlier each day and in no time at all, it will be dark by 4:00 p.m. I sit with my equine friends. Their coats are already growing thicker and soon the lush grass will disappear. Do they sense what’s coming? I sit quietly and watch from just beyond the fence. I zoom in once and see Bliss and Flower.

Zoom in again and I see Khrysta’s head appear from the run in shed.

And if I zoom in more, I can show you Cash and Blossom grazing.

Or Flower grazing underneath Khrysta’s belly.

My zoom lens allows you to see horses peacefully grazing on their mountainside pasture instead of dots in the distance.

It’s a matter of perspective. There are times in our lives when we need to refocus and think about the bigger picture. This is one of those times for me. I’ll be taking a mini break from blogging. Just posting a couple of times a week. I’ll be available by email as always but it’s time to step back from the zoom lens.
May everyone’s weekend be all that you want it to be.

Enjoy your time away, Sara. It’s nice to take a break sometimes. We’ll all be here when you get back !
I love your wide open space and sky that you have there. Sigh. I’m envious as we live wayyyyy too close to our neighbors. City life suffocates me on most days.

I love the way you look at things: through the camera lens AND at life in general!! Enjoy your mini-break!

I never get tired of looking at your farm pictures. You for sure have a place you can call heaven.
The early morning light before the sun is actually up is my favorite time of day.

What a brilliant post!
Yes, I agree the zoom is great, but after using the zoom so frequently, we tend to forget there IS a bigger picture, and sometimes the bigger picture needs to be viewed.
Seems there are many of us who are taking a little break – I honestly don’t know how you find the time to blog as frequently as you have.
(Oh, yes I do…you have Mountain Man.)
Sit back, relax, and take care of the bigger picture for now.

Have a nice break!
Beautiful photos as always, the 4 and 5 seems like Van Gogh paintings to me.

The photos are gorgeous and you have an amazing zoom lens to get that close of a photo from so far away!!! I never tire of seeing the photos of your wonderful mountain life
I love you you tie that together with real life and keep things in perspective
it’s funny you should mention taking a mini-break from blogging. I’ve thought about doing that…and setting particular days for posting. Have a great week. Love and hugs from Oregon, Heather

Did I miss something? Are you going somewhere? I like seeing the horses instead of the dots! The grass is so green! Any news on Pete?

Sara,
I’m with you in that I like the fall, and after the summer temps we’ve had here in Arkansas this year (and still having them), I look forward to this fall. Love reading your blogs and seeing your beautiful pictures. Enjoy your break, and give Bliss, Trey & Tigger a hug for me.

So much space smack dab in the middle of paradise, it is fantastic!
Your camera has amazing zoom capabilities. I have a little point and shoot Canon Powershot A70 and am woefully lacking on the zoom feature. I’ve missed some (what would have been) great shots of our local hawks, owls, cranes and egrets because I just could not get close enough. I keep hinting to my hubby about wanting a new camera. Maybe Santa will bring me one for Christmas, but usually MY Santa brings me something for the house, like a new kitchen appliance. Well guess my Santa always has his stomach on his mind. LOL
