The End of Autumn

Sandwiched between the riotous color of fall and the pristine beauty of snow covered fields lies the end of Autumn.  Day after day of unrelenting gray marks the Northeast Kingdom.  We watch the weather this time of year, we note the freezing days and complain about colder weather on the way.  We complain about the warmer days as well knowing that they will soon end.  It’s an unsettled time of year as we wait for the onslaught we know is coming.

Yesterday, Mountain Man and I moved Khrysta’s pasture for the last time this year.  The grass is gone.  She won’t venture far from the barn when the snow is waist deep.  No need to tend fences that will be brought down in the drifting snow.  And the bane of my existence, hunting season, will start in just another week.  We can’t take a chance a lost hunter will wander into our woods and take a misplaced shot.

I pulled the fence posts and then waited for Mountain Man to join me half way up the pasture.  Brown, gray, as far as the eye can see.  The wind whistled through the pines.  As I watched Mountain Man in the distance, I thought about my life.  So many years now, so many Autumns.  Will there be another one?  Only God has that answer.  I allow myself to feel the sensation of the wind on my face.  I see the dead leaves dance with every gust.  Mountain Man draws closer.  I pick up the fence posts and head over.  Back to work, no time to dwell on the inevitable march of time.  I’m here, alive now, and that’s enough.

Without the desolation of winter we will not get the beauty of spring.

Ahhh in your setting, the afterlife of heaven must look similar – you live in such beautiful, heavenly country, it can't be much different (though without the misplaced hunters and waist deep snow taking down your fences, I am sure)!
I hope you have a good weekend.

It's so strange to live in a place where there are no strong delineations between seasons. Sure, it will be rainier in next few months, but there is no space here between the end of Autumn and the beginning of winter.

Lovely post.

Nice to see Mountain Man back. Autumn is a gorgeous time except with the sky is filled with dark clouds that look ominous! Sad to see winter coming.

It used to long for a "BIT" of snow at this time of year. It really does luminate everything at night, especially with a bright moon.

Well at least you don't ever have to sing "I dreaming of a White Christmas."

Glad MM is back! I'm still running the AC, Thursday we were hottest in the nation. I can without a doubt say I hate Florida weather. It's no fun! Hard to enjoy Halloween when it is close to 100 outside. 2 weeks ago we were teased with lower temps and NO HUMIDITY. My kinda weather! My Dad was born in Maine, how come I can't be there??

What a beautiful post. Thank you!
I know you are glad Mountain Man is home :)
Hunters are scary in this area too.
We have so many poachers that just don't give a *#@&! Our property is posted with signs everywhere and they just ignore them. The bane of my existence..
I think that is so awesome you are profiling other bloggers! I really enjoy reading about them and visiting their sites!
We have a new filly! She is adorable…
Always look forward to your posts, Mountain Woman!

I agree. I would hate the hunting season and having to hear and worry about the shooting. Glad you are enjoying the beautiful Fall with Mountain Man.

Even with the gray skies, the photos are still beautiful. And, just think, soon you will have a nice warm scarf and hat to keep you warm through the winters! ;o)

Those clouds are there so that you can find the silver linings! Things are still alive out there in all the grey; you just have to look in different places. Keep warm!

Our Autumn, unlike our work, is over for the year. November dawned cold, rainy and dreary…right on schedule. I enjoy, and look forward to, winter's sleep and also look forward to November's rain. I like to eat so I like the rain -grin-.
Muzzle season began yesterday; there goes the quiet.

Adventures as at once exciting and scary!

I wish we could drive a huge truck load of hay to see you!

Wishes are for dreaming (as my Grandmother would say). But maybe…maybe someday…
