Spider Bite Blues

Saturday morning I woke up with a small red mark on my finger. No big deal. I thought a spider bit me during the night. I felt fine and went about my day. Sunday morning, I woke up to a swollen, red hand with obvious signs of an infection so off I went to the Emergency Room. I still thought it was a spider bite. I learned at the Emergency Room that spiders in Vermont get lots of bad press and are blamed for many unexplained red marks. I also learned that my problem was not a spider bite.

If you have read my initial blog entries, you will know about my year long struggle with MRSA (staph) and its aftermath. I’ve been fine for a while now and haven’t given it another thought. Gone and forgotten and in the past. But what I thought was a spider bite wasn’t. It’s another MRSA infection and this time I have no idea whatsoever how it happened but I’ve also learned MRSA germs can live everywhere including on dogs and on humans. And, unfortunately, once you have had MRSA, you are more at risk for developing it again.

Luckily, I caught it quickly before it had spread beyond my hand. I’m on antibiotics and they are working well. I’m supposed to stay off my feet and rest for a week with my hand elevated. Staying idle (and off the computer) is not the easiest task for me but I’m trying.

I won’t be online much this week to visit my friends.

I just wanted to alert everyone that if you or your child has an unexplained red mark that seems swollen and red, don’t ignore it and think it is a bug bite. Make sure you get it checked because if it is MRSA, the sooner it is treated, the better.

I am so sad to hear about your hand. Turn the computer off and come back when you are well. Maybe clean all your computer areas as well since the germs could be on your keyboard too.

I was just reading last week about how the infection looks like a spider bite. Take really good care of yourself. Get better soon.

Never heard of it ???

One thing good about our winters it that is kills everything in your pillows and bed mattress….Put them outdoors for a few hours in very freezing cold weather.

I do my mattress once a year….and my pillows often…makes them smell so fresh.

I’m sorry to hear about your hand but it certainly is good you caught it before it spread any further! Hope those anibiotics work for you quick! A whole week off your feet with no computer–wow, that would be tough for me too!

OH! Please take care of yourself. I know three people in our area that have fought that stuff.

Turn the computer off, rest, take your meds, and know we are praying for YOU!

It took me until I 52 years old to know and understand that I have logical association disability…..I was the one who cried because I couldn’t seem to remember what to do, one red, then one green, then one red…
How I found out about the disability….after YEARS of trying to make a quilt, crochet beyond simple chains, read patterns, I had myself tested. I have a learning disability…. (This is why I can NOT do math besides simple math), in today’s world I would have been taught tricks that help me over come the problem. NOW I understand!
That is why I hate playing games!
Crafting beyond simple crafts!
Now I KNOW!
So what I have done is begin teaching myself how to think differently…I can now play domino’s and WIN, I can sculpt little things in clay, and I have other skills that make others smile.

Glad you went and had your hand looked at by a Dr. so quickly – that was really smart. Thanks for the reminder about MRSA. Seems like that issue has sort of died down in the press lately, so this is a good reminder to stay vigilant.
