Short But Oh So Sweet

Hi everyone. Although we had none of the snow that hit western New York, we did have a fierce windstorm and lost power for 24 hours. We were fine although I must say I missed the television.

This evening when I went to tuck in the poultry group, I had a big surprise. Without further introduction, here it is. My Very First Egg!

And in case you are wondering about the size, it’s tiny and it’s the prettiest blush pink so I think it’s from one of my Ameraucana hens.

But it’s real and it’s my first one ever and I’m excited! And to think my chickens are only 5 months old. This farmer life is really exciting.

How precious. Looks like one of the girls is practicing, won’t be long now before you’ll be rolling in eggs. My daughter got her baby chicks about 3 or 4 weeks after you received your flock. She can hardly wait for her girls to start laying eggs. Oh yes, she thought she was getting all female birds but turns out she has about 4 roosters in the flock. She’s not too happy about that but so far the boys haven’t been too bad about the crowing … yet ! :D

Sara, I do like how you get so excited about the simpliest farm things. I hope your girls give you pleasant delights for many years to come. My grandson is with you about no power and no TV. He doesn’t know how anyone could have possibly lived without TV when our power went off.. It made for an interesting conversation about the pioneers that settled Nebraska and lived without electricity and TV every day.

Have a great first egg day.

So, what will you do with that tiny little egg? Will their future eggs be that tiny too? Very Cute!

I remember our first eggs and the excitement they created…I measured, took pictures, cracked them, watched them, put them on the scales…and let me tell you, if you have the farming bug-and you do, this excitement will never go away-it hasn’t for me. I am always thrilled to count the eggs for the day, touch them, look at the colors of the shells, hold them in my hand, and of course, my favorite, cook with them.
I don’t think I will ever again be without chickens.
