Ready or Not

Fall to winter; the seasons march implacably forward paying no heed to my desire to stay suspended in the burnished colors of fall.I watch as ice forms a thick crust over Red Pine Mountain each morning and I long for warmth. Expletives can be heard as the first blast of cold morning air hits my body.
My fingers are numb as I perform my chores. Yet, I refuse to put on a hat, gloves, coat. No, I am not ready to be shrouded in the apparel of winter.I shiver as I survey the world.
Unhesitant, self assured, nature marches on.
Horses used to grazing on lush green grass turn to hay for their forage.
Dogs, invigorated by the cold weather, play with an enthusiasm that eludes me.Is it age that makes me long for the longer, kinder days that have passed?
Evenings are spent cocooned by comforters and the warmth of a wood stove.
I am not a willing participant in this change. I complain, I grumble. But when I stop, when I’m quiet, I allow myself to appreciate the beauty of our farm as it prepares for its winter’s rest.

What beautiful words and pictures.
I am ready for cooler weather but not cold weather. It is still in the high 80′s here. And dry! The leaves haven’t even turned much yet.
The fire in the heater does look inviting though.
Have a great warm day.

Those darn seasons, marching on with no regards for our appreciation of Fall and our preference to put off winter a wee bit longer!
It is lovely, though.

Hi everyone
I’ve missed all of you and your blogs too. We’re inundated with company for leaf peeper season and I haven’t dropped any cards or done my usual visiting. I’m also trying to take advantage of the last of the weather before the snow starts falling. I hope to be back to normal soon.
I couldn’t keep calling the mare Pamela or any part of that name because my good friend is named Pam and we were getting confused.
I decided to call her Khrysta which I read is an old Greek word for gold. I appreciate all your suggestions and help so much!

We’ve noticed a real turn in our weather just in the last week, you can feel it in the air that winter is approaching. Luckily for us we haven’t had a frost yet though. It was only 2 weeks ago that we had 80 degree days yet. From Sunday to today all of a sudden the foliage has started to change color so it won’t be long now. How’s the new horse settling in?

It always scared me a bit…that time just before winter…living in the country.
But at least when the snow comes you can see at night again…especially with a bright moon. I miss that…walks in the snow at night with a bright full moon.

Your mountain is so beautiful! The way you describe it makes it even more interesting. I wish I had the chance to live in a place like that. By the way, I found your blog through Karen’s.
