Rambling On

Have you had a day where you woke up in a bad mood and all you want to do is pull the covers over you head? That was me on Monday. What was wrong? I’m usually annoyingly cheerful.

Maybe it had to do with two incredibly warm 40 degree days with the most amazing skies. Warm air plus cold ground equals breathtaking scenes of beauty.

See? That’s actually grass Flower is sniffing. And the mountains kept morphing all day as the mist changed. Oh, it was gloriously warm. No hat, no mittens, no scarves. My thoughts turned to spring.

But that ended Monday morning when we awakened to find ourselves back in the deep freeze. Only one problem; instead of cushiony snow, ice covers our ground and I am crawling to the barn. Old bones plus slipping on ice doesn’t mix.

Or maybe I was cranky because because Mountain Man managed to put up 9 cords of wood in one day including pulling the fallen logs from the woods. He came inside only to fix our always magnificent dinner. Gee, I’m starting to get a complex because he never complains.

The turkeys came to see what was wrong but I sent them away.

It wasn’t until dinner that night when Mountain Man put things in perspective. I’m missing Faeden. “He was an incredible dog.” Mountain Man said. “Give yourself time. What else have you been doing?”

That was all I needed to tell Mountain Man about my latest exploits with the turkeys. Teaching them to eat from utensils. In case, just in case, Hollywood should call. What did I feed them? Why left overs from Christmas dinner. In particular, stuffing mixed with cranberry sauce, mixed in a little yogurt and oatmeal.

“Mountain Man,” I asked “do you think anyone else in the country has turkeys that eat from silverware?”

“Hmm, maybe you should ask yourself if you think anyone else in the country is actually trying to feed turkeys from silverware? As long as you’re enjoying yourself. That’s what’s important. You’ve got to be yourself.”

And that is why this blog is going to be undergoing a major renovation in the next couple of months. I have exciting things planned but most of all, I’m going to take Mountain Man’s advice and be myself. Thanks one and all for visiting us.

Your birds are surely one spoiled bunch of turkeys!!
I truly love and enjoy your beautiful pictures of your mountain and your post are posts great. I do visit you weekly (sometimes everyday), but don’t always comment. But whatever you have new in store for us this year on your blog I’m sure will keep us entertained and coming back for more.
And, thank you for the comment and info you shared with me about finding the little choir boy sets or angel choir sets. I will look at the Vermont Country Store site.

The new blog direction sounds interesting! I too struggle with these gray days. If not for my blogging buddies, I would remain sad. I love your turkey training!

Hi, Happy New Year. Did you lose Faeden. I’m behind in my reading.I tried to find it in your posts, I know he was so sick and if you did,I am very sorry. Faeden the perfect companion!
I do wake up in bad moods. I don’t know why, but your Mountain Man is so unbelievable. He works all day then cooks! He also supports you. I think you are the ONLY one who ever fed a turkey with silverware! That is too funny!!
Have a nice day!

Hello Mountain Woman!
I can totally understand how you feel about your feathered friends….I feel the same way about my chickens. Mine haven’t graduated to the fork yet…just the spoon ;) What beautiful views of the mountains you have…when I see that it makes me miss British Columbia but then I start thinking of the 40-60 feet of snow every winter and then I’m glad I live in Kansas now. I do miss how the landscape changes with shadows and colors though. I’m excited to see the changes you have in store…I’ll be watching to see what they are! Have a wonderful day. Maura :)

I wouldn’t say that I have bad mood days but more like melancholy days when I reflect on happy days past with my nine years passed wife. The memories are good and happy but sometimes I really miss her complany. She truly was my soul mate. Life goes on and now I have many activies to use up my time. Well, then, you know me, I can always find a project or two to keep me occupied.

I can’t imagine how you can be any more real than you have been in your blog but I continue to be surprised at the creativity of bloggers and their writing of blogs. I can’t wait to see how things will change.

Have a great frosty winter day.

You always make me smile and laugh :) :) Yes, I was having a major case of the grumbles earlier this week. Woke up grumpy and stayed grumpy all day…not even an “apology” coffee from my father seemed to help!!! Faeden sounds like the sweetest dog…and thank you for sh aring about him with us, even in your hurt !!!

Okay…I can’t get enough of Turkey Crest stories…so keep them coming!!! I agree with Mountain Man…you gotta be yourself..and I think it’s super cute that you’re teaching them table manners :) :) I can’t wait to see what new changes you’re bringing to this blog :) :) Extra bonus love and hugs for you from Oregon, Heather :)

Gerard always would like to stay in bed longer–it’s hard to get up in the morning when you hate your job and have to get up so early. Me, I am usually ready to get up early because that’s when I’m most productive and look forward to a new day. Once in awhile though, I like sleeping in until 7 or 8, especially if my pets come up to where I can pet them.

Oh, we are all entitled to a few grumpy days…especially this time of year when the weather is so darn gloomy. We had the warm-up as well, and now, well….we just have frozen mud everywhere and it is not very nice to look at. Give yourself some time to grieve over Faeden–you and he certainly deserve it. Losing a friend is never easy and it takes time…..lots and lots of time.

In the meantime, enjoy your silly birds and Mtn. Man. Embrace what is good in the world and wallow in your memories of your friend.

Hugs, pally. I look forward to another year of posts by you–gloomy or funny. :)

Turkey/guinea whisperer that you are, I’m sure if you explained your grouchy mood, your loyal followers ( I do think their blood lines are crossed with lemmings! ) would understand. Once they’ve mastered eating from silverwear, it’s time to enroll them in ballroom dance!

Wherever your blog is headed, I’m jumping on the train. You are always a delight and a nice break from my everyday world.

Give yourself time is great advice. Time to remember the pup and all he meant to you!!
Our pup is under the weather since his annual vet visit on Monday. Like my son said- he lost his “waggy-ness”. For a dog that is over excited whenever you glance his way …..thats not so great.
Suspense…..what will the utensil fed turkey lady do to change her blog?? Hmmmm. I havent a clue but I am anxious to see what it is!!

You’re changing your blog? You’re now going to be who you really are? So you’ve you been holding back on us all this time? ;-)

My sister’s turkeys are pets like yours and do the funniest things, too! They act like children sometimes–especially when they’re competing to get into her lap.

Thankfully, I haven’t awakened in a grumpy mood for a long time! The ol’ hormones just sorta leveled out when I passed 55! Before that I’d suffer from PMS most of the month! So glad that is all behind me now!

Feeding your turkeys from a fork.

Most folks EAT their turkey on a fork.

I admire you for taking such good care of yours. Don’t change too much!

My goodness, your brood has certainly grown and are turning into such aristocratic lords and ladies … eating from silverware no less. :)
My daughter purchased her small flock of chicks shortly after you received yours. Her flock too has grown up and she now calls me in great excitement over the eggs that they are laying. Her flock of 13 chicks (a baker’s dozen) ended up with 4 roosters … she’s already offered me a rooster but not sure the little guy would be very happy with out a harem to look after.

I’m anxious to see your new blog format and the direction in which you intend to take it. It’s hard to imagine your being any more natural and “yourself” than you have been.
