Music or Plain Old Noise

Hi everyone. Thanks for visiting me and leaving your wonderful comments. I’m not much in a writing mood lately so today is video day.

I’ve had some questions about guineas which I’ll try to answer honestly. I think guineas are wonderful but I’ve learned they are definitely not for everyone. Apart from needing room to roam, they are noisy. Always, all the time, day in and day out. To me it’s part of the background music of the farm but I’ve had visitors who upon hearing the guineas screech have left holding their ears and vowed never to return.

So you can decide for yourself, here are the guineas. First up taking a walk with their mom (that’s me). You’ll notice there is one main “guard” guinea who constantly makes noise while the others dine on insects but if something were to frighten the guard, he/she would make an incredible racket and off they all would fly.

Did you make it through the video? Do you have a headache or do you feel refreshed? Because if you decide to get guineas, you’ll hear that noise all the daylight hours. Oh, in the background you can hear the turkeys chirping while they attempt to dine on the buttons of my coat.

And here they are doing barn chores with me.

Perhaps you are thinking just one or two would be enough? Guineas seem to thrive in larger groups perhaps because there is safety in numbers.

And because no post would be complete without the turkeys, here’s my male strutting his stuff . He’s still got another month before he’s full grown.

Now you’ve heard the sounds. Is it music to your ears or just shrieking noise?

I vote “music to my ears” :) :) :) :) The guineas noise wasn’t that made….just constant :) :) :) …but I could deal with that. They are rather cute. I’ve never seen them “live”…just in photos, so it was really fun watching run around…they look like they’re wearing old-fashioned “bustles” underneath their feathers :) :) :)

Mr. Gobble Gobble was cute too…and I’ve always wondered about that large fan of feathers on their bums….It reminds me of those stiff-lace collars that they used to wear in 17th century England for some reason :) :) :)

Ah…life on a farm…it’s glorious ;) :) :) Thanks for sharing these videos with us :) :) Bonus love and hugs from Oregon, Heather :)

My goodness, do they ever stop? The guineas, I mean. How can they hear approaching peril if they are constantly making that racket? It seems like they loudly announce their presence and availability for some predators dinner plate!

LOL… this is so funny. Mine haven’t started the constant, ongoing racket YET. They will be 10 weeks old tomorrow. But I was reading through my book on guineas just last week, and the author did make a point of saying that until they are at least a year old, they will make noise A LOT, at everything! She said once they become more mature, they won’t screech all the time, at every single thing on the property.

So we’ll have to compare notes next summer, eh? :-) Hopefully they will quiet down by then and let some of the other animals on the farm sing their song too.

I vote on music, that was very nice to watch. I was thinking the guard guinea must have a soar throat by now.

I’ve been around guineas during my youth days and definitely think it’s an acquired sound. It never bothered me to hear them but it is a different kind sound from turkeys and chickens. The big Tom turkey was gorgeous. I haven’t been around turkeys so I have no reference about how they are to live with. From all your posts, it seems that you have a great time with all your bird flocks.

What ever happened to all the roosters from your chicken flock?

Have a great day with your flocks.

That’s the kind of music that sounds like ‘peaceful’, ‘nature’, ‘freedom’ and ‘relaxing’. It sounds a bit like geese flying over. But I don’t know what I would say if they were nearby 24/7…

Well, I guess it beats lawn mowers, ATVs, leaf blowers and loud motorcycles that I hear here. I’ll take country noise over city noise any day!

Music to my ears! It beats me how people get out of bed in the morning and turn on the radio or television. Why? My prayer is, if I ever have to live in a nursing home, I’ll be deaf so I won’t have to listen to the sheer NOISE. It boggles my mind right out of my senses to be subjected to noise.
I had a blog photo of wild turkeys this week; counted 17 but some had already entered the woods.
BTW, I’m in sincere lust over that donkey. Just wanted you to know in case the little darlin’ shows up missing.

Both! We have around 35 guineas so I am very use to their “songs”. But I can’t imagine a single day without hearing it. It sounds like home.
Now..I want a turkey or two. He is beautiful!
Have a great day.

Hi, First my prayers are still with Faeden. Your a good mom.
Second, HMMMM, I’m not sure about the constant noise. It depends if you like a like a lot of noise or not. I would like to get a parrot, but they are VERY loud and I’m not sure if I can listen to that all the time. Mr. O’Riely my one cockatiel is pretty loud now…only when I’m the phone or if the dogs are barking. So, they are pretty, that counts, but if your the type that likes to be quite….then….Oh, do you have another pasture you can put them in? Not so close to you home? I love the turkeys, we have them walking around here too!
Well, I wasn’t not much help. But what ever you decide, it will be right for you and that is all the matters.

Oh my goodness it’s so good to see your blog and lovely farm again!! I am city girl turned country years ago but have only had one experience with guineas and it was a nightmare.

I got them because they are so good at killing snakes and we do have a pond. But, I bought them already full grown. Well, let’s just say I spent an entire week running all over the place trying to get them back onto our property.

They would fly over the fence and then stand there and stare at the very same fence, squawking all the time, driving our neighbors and me nuts.

One week was all I could take and I quit chasing them back. I do hope to get babies and raise them though after my hubby comes off the road and lives here full time.

He is the country boy and knows how to do all that stuff!!

Oh I hope you have a great day and week!!
Hugs,
Jackie:-)
