Mountain Man

Recently, Homestay Mama and Maura asked if Mountain Man ever just sat and relaxed. Instead of my usual answer, I decided to ask him. His response, “I’m semi-retired now. They should have seen me when I was really working.” But the real answer is he does relax in the evenings but no, never during the day. No, he doesn’t take breaks and no he never stops from sunrise to sunset. But he’s happy. He’s doing what he loves and if you were to press him for an answer, he’d tell you “I don’t know anything different.” Perhaps that’s why he’s so suited to farm life where there are always chores.

And today just happened to be one of my favorite chores because it means spring is here; putting up the pasture fencing. Or I guess more accurately finding the pasture fence because it’s been buried under snow for months. No need to worry about the horses in the winter. They have no desire to tramp through snow over their head and they stay close to the barn.

It’s quite the task encompassing acres of land.

And not always a pleasant job because with worn out gloves those darned fiber splinters pierce your skin. Ouch!

And although they should be grateful, Flower and Blossom decide they don’t want Logan around and he doesn’t want to see them either. He decides to wait up the hill for Mountain Man.

It’s a job that involves lots of bending over.

And in places going knee deep in snow.

But he’s not alone because one of our beloved dogs is always with him.

And a flock of crazy birds who loudly express their opinion that he should be processing firewood and not doing stuff for darn hay burners.

And when he’s done with the fencing, he moves right on to the next task; pulling wood to create the balustrade for the staircase he’s building.
And not wanting to be left out, his gang of crazy birds decides to follow.

And now I hear the tractor running so he’s on to something else but I know if it’s daytime, I’ll never find Mountain Man being idle.

Thanks everyone for visiting us! Have a great Sunday.

Oh it’s so nice to see the sunshine and a brilliant blue mountain sky in your photos again. Of course that means Mt. Man has more chores to add to his list of things to do but I think a long “to do” list is what keeps him happy.

That’s so neat that you dog and birds follow him around. You have to read “Rose In A Storm” by Jon Katz! You’ll love it! That snow still looks way too deep to me to be trudging around in. Does you fence fall down every year?

I used to work all the time like that, but somewhere I got older and lazier. What a great lifestyle, though.

Sara, I am anxious to get into the garden and outside projects. I don’t think I would like the long winters that you have there. It’s one of the reasons I will never move from Nebraska. We have winter here and sometimes quite severe, but always we have a nice Spring that lasts about two months. The seasons here really do, most years, follow the astrological seasons. My relatives that have lived in Las Vegas for over 20 years still try to get me to move there especially since I retired. Nebraska has great soil to grow things as well which I guess is just in my genes due to having so many farmer in my heritage.

Have a great Vermont day.

I like Mountain Man. People are always telling me that when they see me, I’m always working on something, etc. I just find the relaxing life a tad dull. Of course, I’m not retired yet, so my work hasn’t even begun!!

That is the way it is around here. But Terry is starting to say things like—when I retire from farming (then he will say….I’m not going to retire you’ll find me on a tractor until the day I die)

We are lucky, you and I!

I like Mtn Man because he keeps busy, but he’s doing what he loves to do. How many of us drive through traffic to jobs we don’t like? Too many, I’d say. Looks like a hard, but a good life there.

Karen–I met Jon Katz a couple of years ago. I like his books too.
