Mountain Man Mondays; What To Do About The Water?

I’m not all that particular about food but when it comes to drinking water, I admit I require parasite free water or at least no visible sludge. There’s no city water here. We have well water. You’d think when all your water comes from a well, efforts would have been made to protect it but we soon discovered any number of pipes depositing gray water (and maybe worse) right at the door to the well house. And someone decided to build the chicken coop right off the back of the well house adding to the mystery water. But time has passed and Mountain Man redid all the pipes and the ramshackle chicken house is scheduled for demolition. The water was tested and found to be fine until I looked out the window one day and saw our male dogs peeing on the well house. Seems the smell of all that old waste water was too hard for them to resist lifting their legs and marking.
“Mountain Man, the dogs are peeing on the well house. I’m not drinking that water. Don’t want pee water. It better not come out of the shower yellow either or I’m out of here.”
“I’d better get out there and redo the fencing.” And out Mountain Man went. He hauled 50 pound bags of concrete, dug fence holes by hand in this soil that is comprised of rock and quickly the fence was in. We had decided to purchase the gate but when we started pricing the wide gates, they were almost $300 and we’re on a tight budget. Never fear, Mountain Man dipped into his supply of lumber and made the gate.
And, while he was doing this project, the idea occurred to him to put a roof over the deck so I would still have a place to read and be outside with the dogs when it rained. Whew, I get tired just watching him. Here’s some of the photos:
The new gate and the new fence line.
Mountain Man decided to put steel covering over the roof. Measuring to make sure it’s just right.
While he was up there, he put in soffet vents. That’s a close up of our Vermont wood.
He still has more finish work but it’s enough for the moment. He’s moving on to building the new master bedroom suite.
What did we purchase to do this project? The bags of concrete, the steel roofing and assorted nails but the wood came from Vermont and the wire for the fencing was reclaimed from an old pig pen. Mountain Man tries to never waste anything and he’s gotten very creative at “Reuse, Recycle”

Moutain Man and Terry are made from the same cloth. The barn he is putting up has been gathered over years and years.
Everything is looking really nice!

It just came to me that your header picture reminds me of the pinup girls of the 40's- Kneeling and leaning forward on their extended arms to smile at the camera. Of course, I could be wrong.

I feel for you. I, too, am on well water and have to deal with all the "great" things that come with it (see my post at http://shellysstuffjewelry.blogspot.com/2009/11/how-we-spent-saturday.html). Mountain Man seems alot like my Dave. I'm always amazed at the things he is capable of. Have a great week!

The main thing is you have safe drinking water–so much work! It seems there's always some project needing to be done. Poor Mountain Man!

Glad you have a solution for the water pollution!! Did it help to change the color of your water by stopping the dogs from donating to the cause?
That is a mighty fine deck he built. Does he ever take the time to sit on it too and enjoy all his hardwork?

First, I can't believe how hard MM likes to work.
Have you tried washing a load of white clothes only yet…are they coming out white?
I never drink Well water, always bought those giant water bottles. I know bottled water is the same as tap water…but I rather have "tap" water than Well water.

When we first moved to Thistle Cove Farm, I wanted three things – a well for water, wood heat for heat, gas cook stove. Our well is 600 feet deep and we think we've hit an artesian well, we get 75 gallons a minute and it's the sweetest water in the world! Limestone water and it's pure, clear, sweet and cold.

Your posts always amaze me!
Tell Mountain Man he is doing a great job!
I can't blame you about the water at all…
It really looks nice.
How warm is it?

That man is a genius! And kind too.

In case he didn't tell you, your well is probably several hundred feet deep. So, there is no danger of dogs contaminating your drinking water. Besides, they may be provided important nutrients. (LOL?)

Wow, your sky is such a bright blue, and MM is working in short slleves, so it must be nice weather there. I'm sure you'll enjoy that covered deck this winter, take care!

Really, is there ANYTHING that man can't do?!
I'm just envious. You seriously need to think about cloning.

Dog pee wont kill ya..and your well water is down so deep it is filtered so well by the time you get it anyway, I would much rather drink good well water than the stuff that comes out of the tap in any city.
Your new porch look great!

Wow, it's amazing how one project can lead so effortlessly into another. I like the roof over your deck. I want to try something like that for our backyard.

Really, where does Mountain Man get all of his energy! He is a one man construction crew! I dont know anyone who can accomplish as much as what he does in a month in a whole year!
