Mountain Man Mondays; Remodeling an RV

Mountain Man and I, well, we’re a little strange. Maybe it’s living with so many animals or maybe it’s just the way we are. Anyway, we march to the beat of our own drummer and at times, we can definitely seem odd to others. Just how odd may become more apparent to you after reading this post.

A couple of years ago, Mountain Man and I had the desire to explore other parts of the country. We were searching for a place to live where the weather is not so harsh nor are the property taxes so extreme. A place to spend our retirement years without having to worry about whether or not we we will be able to hold on to our farm from year to year. We know such places exist and our mission became to find them. But, unlike most people who own a dog or two or perhaps even three, we have seven and when we travel, they all come with us.

In order to accommodate our large family, we purchased an RV where we could all ride together. We found a beautiful one, complete with a luxurious interior and upscale amenities, much, much nicer than our home. Ah, the fact that it was bargained priced and the beauty of it swept us away but we were soon to discover it wasn’t very practical for a family of 9.

It was great being together in the big old bus headed down the road. The dogs loved it and became seasoned travelers. That is, until it was time to stop and then they all wanted to pile out of the only door at the same time. Chaos ensued as 7 anxious canines tried to knock down each other, Mountain Man and me to be the first one down the steep steps.

Mountain Man and I tried different methods of controlling them but no matter what we tried, we just couldn’t find a system that worked. And, after we had two very close calls of losing dogs at rest stops on the interstate, we both vowed we would never, ever go anywhere again.

Ah, but time has passed and our property tax bill is still rising (we’ve passed five figures now) and at the same time, our income is still decreasing so we have decided once again to hit the road in search of a less expensive place to live.

We knew our RV wasn’t practical for us so we tried to sell it, but in this economy there were no buyers. Then, we decided we’d trade it for something that worked better for us. We looked at modestly priced RVs and trailers thinking the equity in ours would cover the cost of the trade. We visited RV dealer after RV dealer but none of them were willing to work with us. The final blow came this weekend when we found an RV that cost substantially less than ours and the dealer told us we would still owe a ton of money even with our trade.

But, the ever resourceful Mountain Man was not to be deterred. He has come up with a plan to make our RV work for us and on Sunday, he set about remodeling it to be dog friendly.

His vision is to remove the lounge chair and the sofa giving us more floor space up front. Then, where the couch used to be, he is going to build an area for dog crates for three of our dogs. On top the crates, he is going to build a platform which he will turn into a couch for the dogs so they can see out the windows while we are traveling down the road. The platform will be anchored to the existing structure and have a guard railing as well so there will be no danger of movement while we are driving.

In the place where the chair used to rest, there will be another built in dog kennel. And, finally, at the back of our RV, he is going to put in a dog gate. When he is done with the renovations, we will have the ability to separate and contain all of the dogs so when we stop, they will not be in any danger of bolting out of the RV.

Now, I know some of you are going to wonder how we could demolish the interior of such a beautiful RV but the truth is the dogs and their safety and well being are the more important to us than well appointed interior amenities.

And, look for us to be out on the road in the near future. We’ll be the RV with seven dogs towing a horse trailer behind us.

Lilly used to enjoy riding in the chair.
Now, the chair has been removed providing additional space for a dog crate.

An interior shot of the RV, complete with couch and chair.
Mountain Man works on removing the couch.
It is bolted down to the floor and doesn’t want to remove easily.
Ah, but never fear. This is Mountain Man after all and he can do anything.

Finally, it’s moving!
The couch removed.

Mountain Man works on removing the final bolts in order to have a flat surface on which to build the kennel inserts.

The empty space where the couch used to rest and soon to be filled with built in kennels.

Stay tuned as the RV remodel progresses!

OMG! What a challenge! Well, being an old dog show person, here goes the lecture. All traveling animals should travel in a crate. It’s for their safety and yours. And taking them out at rest stops(I used to show several at a time) becomes much easier, because you can relieve them one at a time because you can leash them. Hope it’s not to harsh, but I do care about animal safety. Have fun!

This makes me sad that you might be leaving the mountain. It’s such a beautiful place but I can understand the taxes taking a big bite out of your pocket. You all should be really comfy with new accomodations. Happy Trails to you!

You and your DH are people like Terry and I, although we don’t travel. You make do with what you have. AND I’m glad you take all your animals, (horses included) with you. Come to Colorado! You are invited!

Welcome to the RV life! Even though my husband had to drag me kicking and screaming on our year-long bus trip, I ended up loving it so much, I was the one who suggested that instead of selling our rig, we sell our house so we can full time!

I’m glad there wasn’t a storage area under that sofa,.. often that’s the case with an access door from the outside. I guess Mt.Man could even have taken care of that! What a guy! :)

It sounds like a very innovative business idea is brewing…Retrofitting RVs to house and transport pets…can you see the potential? With such a handy man at home anything is possible. I know because my city man is very very handy…plumber, electrician, architect, engineer, installer, designer, builder… all in one and he mops floors under extreme conditions. :>)

Willie and I have always dreamed of traveling cross country in an RV; your photos have inspired me further.

Sounds like a very practical idea for you to remodel the RV to accommodate your dogs’ needs. Not strange at all, very sensible. Mountain Man is a lot like my dad was, whatever is needed, he can make it happen.

I can’t even imagine you off the mountain. You’ve done SO much there. Things are really backwards when hard working people like you can’t continue to improve and be such incredible caretakers, without having to pay for the privilege. Okay. I’ll try to step off my soap box but it’s a LONG way down!

You two are so industrious I know no matter what you will make it work and thrive doing it. Can’t wait for updates from the road and will enjoy all you do and see!

Hi Everyone. Thanks for stopping by.
Mike, thanks for the comment.
Karen, I appreciate your care about safety. That’s why we are putting in crates so we can have control over the dogs when we stop. I would never forgive myself if anything happened to one of them.
Linda, I would LOVE to come visit you but I might not want to leave.
Becky, we haven’t made the ultimate decision to leave but the taxes are a problem especially in this economy where there is not much work. If we do leave, we wouldn’t sell the mountain but leave it in trust to an organization that would preserve it.
Queen of the Road, I would love to be able to take a year off and just travel the country in an RV. We can’t pull into any campgrounds though because of the number of dogs we have so we usually end up in Walmart parking lots or truck stops.
Tara, the dogs do love traveling. It was really surprising to me to see how much they enjoyed being on the road.
Tracey, I’d love to visit Florida, especially in the winter.
Cedar, I’m glad there wasn’t a door either. Never thought of that but I do believe MM can fix anything :-)
Two Greyhound, it’s not a Hurricane. It’s a Damon Intruder but we saw the Hurricane’s and they were lovely.
Fearless, I talked about that with MM because there have to be lots of people on the road with dogs who need better control of them. And, traveling around in an RV is just such a blast. It’s a great way to see the country.
Karen, thanks for the compliment because your Dad was amazing.
Robynn, we’re not leaving yet. We’re fighting to hang on but we have to be prepared for the fact that a retirement income might not cover the taxes and allow us to eat as well. This mountain is very special to both of us.
Thanks everyone for stopping by!

Vermont is such a pretty state, but there are equally pretty places in the rest of the 50 states. And there are good people in all of them. I do hope you’ll head out to the Pacific Northwest, if you haven’t already.

Your Mountain Man sounds a lot like my Dad in his younger years–Dad used trees from the 40 acres where we lived in Oregon, to build a sawmill, then used the sawmill to saw wood for the barn, chicken coop, garage and house. He learned to fly when he was 50. After he retired he went on to build a little two-seater airplane and then an ultralight! Reading about Mountain Man reminds me so much of my Dad. You have a real gem there–a keeper, for sure!

Hey Mountain Woman :D !

You and Mountain Man have 7 dogs? Not strange enough for me (my dad had 11 in his farm).

LOL LOL I can imagine what you guys went through *nodding*. But the solution you guys found was very good!

Woman, you are lucky to have Mountain Man: he knows how to work with his hand (do bricolage) which is something rare nowadays!

I confess I feel sorry for the RV, but if the dogs need space, the dogs need space :D !
I will stay tuned to the sequel!

Cheers

Good Luck, wherever you are led. RV’ing for a while can be fun, but I imagine your husband wouldn’t be able to be idle for very long. If he wants to keep working hard to make a living, consider Kansas. Of course, there wouldn’t be many trees!
