Mountain Man Mondays; One Down, One To Go

It was fun to read your comments about snowy weather. Mountain Man was very pleased to hear the majority agreed with him. Every time I read him a comment, he said, “See” or “There You Go.” But while he’s listening to me read him comments, he’s hard at work. The master bedroom is finished. Well, all except the flooring which Mountain Man will return and install after the dogs and I are back on Red Pine Mountain. And, after spending a couple of days cleaning sheet rock dust from cracks and crevices, I now have a better appreciation of the hazards of being a contractor. If you’ve never experienced sheet rock dust, you don’t want to start.
On to the next phase; creating the second bedroom. Originally, the house had only one bedroom and that just won’t work for most families (although our home in Vermont has only one bedroom). We are taking part of the front area of the house and creating bedroom number 2. It was going to be a nice size room until one day I came up with the brilliant idea to take in the front porch and turn it into living space. After all, Mountain Man had done the same thing to the back porch with such ease, it couldn’t be that big of a job. I broached the subject and after much contemplation of roof pitches and other building concepts that elude me (such as support beams which are a necessity I’m told), Mountain Man became excited about my idea and wholeheartedly endorsed it. We sat down and calculated the additional cost and once again, with my Mountain Man supplying all the labor and 99% of the materials, it is only going to cost time and a few dollars for what we hope will be a wonderful 14 feet by 17 feet bedroom complete with two closets.
This time, I actually got to help to hang the sheetrock and I am told I’ve become quite the expert under Mountain Man’s tutelage. Anyway, here’s some of the photos:
Ripping out the old wall to create the new small corridor between the bedrooms. That beast with the glowing eyes is Logan.
Ripping out the old walls and putting in new insulation. To the right of Mountain Man is one of the new windows.
Mountain Man cleans his debris as he works. He’s much neater than I am.
Preparing to frame the new bedroom wall.
The framing in place. The dogs are always underfoot. That’s our Chinese Crested, Alvin, still in his pajamas, in the forefront.
Logan wonders if Mountain Man could use a stuffed duck.
The sheet rock for the new room stacked behind the framing.
This wall is going to be ripped out to expand the new bedroom.
Another view of the old porch. The living room will also be expanded and Mountain Man will create a new entrance complete with foyer and hall closet.

I'm behnd on my reading (again!) so I missed the post about the snow. Having now read it, I must say I agree with Mountain Man. And, sorry, I agree with him on this one, too: stay. Why go home when you could stay and miss mud season?
On the other hand, yes, I've had plenty of first hand experience with sheet rock dust and know it to be nearly impossible to eradicate. Good luck!

It is just amazing how much progress the two of you are making. Your private, personal contractor is something else, working all hours of the day and night!

It looks like you will have no problems staying warm with all this hard work. It's so wonderful to see a 'shack' turn into a beautiful home. I agree with you, I would leave before the mud, mud is terrible.

The place is coming along very nicely. I love your idea of expanding the house by using the porch and I think the extra bedroom can only help your resale value if you decide to sell. I've had a hand in hanging sheet rock too while we were remodeling, and I thought it was fun. Keep up the great work!

It amazes me how fast you (he) can change a house, and I'm glad he listens to our comments, and approve
It was hilarious when you say …Logan wonders if Mountain Man could use a stuffed duck.

I think Mountain Man will win. It seems he still has lots of work to do. He is awesome! Love how the dogs come to help too! Are you going take the whole porch? I really like porches, especially big ones! Gerard said he didn't want to buy any house that didn't have a porch. He likes them too.

I'm sure he's like most guys and once he starts a project, he will want to finish it. Sounds like you guys are doing great! Logan is sweet. :O)

Too bad the screen porch has to go. I love old screen porches. Love North Arkansas, too. I've seen so many houses that look like yours up there.
I enjoy your blog.

It is going to be so pretty you might not want to go back to Vermont. Take care and keep up the great work.

You are moving at an amazing speed with the renovations. Your creativity and discipline to keep working is wonderful. As always kudos to MM, too!

As usual I am in complete awe. The Artist is extremely handy, can fix just about anything around the house (he learned a lot in the army), and is a quick learner but he doesn't have a lot of experience in construction and I kind of want a barn. I'd like to send him to Missouri and tutor under Mountain Man! : ) He is just as impressed as I am!
Be well ~Andrea~

You two obviously work well together and are acomplishing much! I love the dog bringing him the stuffed animal…
My neighbor's dog has one she carries just like it! You've take some excellent photos and one day you'll look back at them and say "remember when?". It must be a nice feeling to be making progress.

That last comment was by me too…I have trouble with my ID and commenting sometimes. I guess I have too many alter egos.
Great photos – I love that porch.

I vote to stay where you are and finish the remodeling, although it might be awfully cold working on that porch in snowy weather. But then, that's only my two cents worth!
Great pictures.

We seriously need MM's skills at Castle Sidewalker! We love reading the updates on your progress, even though it makes me feel bad that I haven't fixed the small leak in the roof yet…

I have been away for too long… i have missed reading about your adventures… I so wish Michael was as handy with a hammer as MM so obviously is… there are so many projects around here that i would like to do… i have walls i would like to tear down (and put up…) doorways i would like installed… oh so much… i think i should learn some carpentry skills of my own and then i wouldn’t have to wait for him but that could be a bit scary too… who knows what i would tear up…
this room is coming right along… i love the pics…
