Mountain Man Is Home!

Thank you so much for your comments and encouragement and advice. I appreciate them so much and now it’s time to start the party because Mountain Man is home again! He arrived yesterday afternoon and wow, was he a sight for sore eyes but he was also covered in bites. He looks kind of like a pin cushion with the exception of a crater in the middle of his back. “What’s that from?” “Oh, that’s where I used my hammer to get the tick out.” “Why did you do that?” “What else would I use? Besides I wanted to flatten the sucker.”
Our evening resembled Brad Paisley’s “The Tick Song.” Mountain Man could still feel bugs crawling on him so I did a check and sure enough dozens of tiny seed ticks had taken up residence on Mountain Man. One even in his belly button. I hope that’s not too much information but I never knew the places these tiny critters could go. And, no, I didn’t use a hammer to remove them.
After that most interesting time, we went to bed. “Is the bear around?” Mountain Man asked. “I think he’s hanging around the property but I haven’t seen him in the yard again.” We started to doze off and Lilly started barking. I head to the window and sure enough, there’s the bear snuggled under a tree in our back yard.
“Mountain Man, he’s here, he’s here, he’s here.” I started shrieking. “Who’s here?” Mountain Man was in a deep sleep already. “The bear. Come and see him.” Despite the cacophony of 7 dogs barking, the bear was still resting peacefully. That black blob under the tree is our bear.

“Oh, I see him. That’s not a big bear at all.” said Mountain Man. “I know but wait until he stands up and stretches. You’ll see.” And as if the bear heard me, he rose up and walked over to the window. “Yes, that’s a big bear but I don’t think it’s a male. It’s not that big.” Gee, there’s a bear at our door and Mountain Man is telling me it’s not much of a bear. All I can say is it’s taller than the 6’3″ Mountain Man when it’s on its hind legs and twice as wide too. That’s my definition of a big bear.
We made quite the group. The bear and Mountain Man having a face off through the glass, me hiding behind Mountain Man trying to take pictures and learning the camera flash doesn’t work through glass and 7 dogs behind me barking away.
Mountain Man left to get his gun and the bear decided to curl up once again under the tree. I grabbed my noise maker and blasted that. Didn’t phase the bear at all. Mountain Man returned with his shot gun and let out three blasts into the night air and the bear went scurrying away but I could swear he was looking over his shoulder glaring at Mountain Man.
Will he be back? I don’t know. Mountain Man says the shots did the trick.
And this morning? I woke up with a bunch of ticks crawling all over me. Perhaps there is a thing as too much sharing but I’d rather share ticks with Mountain Man than be alone with the bear.

Glad mountain man is home. Seems like the bear wants to share your wonderful kingdom with you.

Oh my! poor you! now I’m glad to live in a town.

So when’s his next trip to the Ozarks? I don’t think I could go back to those awful ticks. How do you eradicate them? Be careful of Lyme diease. My cousin goot it from a tick and is in terrible shape. Just saying be watchful! Now the bear is another story. Is it time to call the game warden?

That would be got not goot. I hate typos and I try to proofread what I am typing but missed that even wiith my glasses. I do better with my contacts.

That bear seems to like you for some reason. Hope it stays away. (and yes, I consider that to be a BIG bear!)

Wow! It’s so scary to see it that close to the house. And it looks plenty big to me! (And after all, how big does a bear have to be to be scary?)

You have such adventures. I’m glad Mountain Man is home, even with ticks and his willingness to share them. Hopefully, the bear will find a new residence.

ugh. Ticks freak me the heck out!!! So glad he’s home and was able to frighten off that “little” bear.

MW, you lead such a pioneer life. Your posts are like reading Little House on the Prairie. Keep it up and your blog could become a modern day wilderness book series. I can just see the picture you describe with Mountain Man facing off with the bear. Who will win the stare down. Oh, and by the way, I agree with you that’s a BIG bear. I’m just glad that he/she (the bear) hasn’t decided to munch on any of your animals.
I’m glad the protective covering is back home ticks and all. My old Grandma’s remedy for ticks was to wash down in kerosene. I don’t think that’s really a good thing to do. It’s a wonder those old folks lived as long as they did. I guess it really was a case of only the strong surviving. Some of the things my Dad describes as cures when he was growing up, I would describe as torture.
Hopefully things will settle down and get back to normal again soon.

I hope Mountain Man is right and the bear won’t be back. But I have confidence that if the bear does return, Mountain Man will deal with it swiftly, humanely, and with his usual ease, then create something spectacular out of his/her…uh…remains.
I have picked two ticks off me this past week; they are TERRIBLE this year! I’m thinking about getting some of that Frontline protection for dogs – for me!

So the bear came back?? Hope MM gun scares him off!!
Ticks? I itched while reading that. eeew.

so glad he is finally back home, bugs and all.

I’m averaging two ticks per day here. I hate the little buggers.

I’ve never seen a tick, that I know of, or chiggers……..yuck! They sound even worse than black flies and mosquitoes….ok I’m getting itchy just typing about bugs. Sometimes Winter ain’t so bad in the country after all.

I saw a documentary recently on bears in Yellowstone and how there are not only more around but they are frequenting the cabins and homes. I think I’d be way too scared to even snap photos. Hopefully those shots in the air did the trick.
Ticks? ewww…
