Just Another Day

Greetings from the frozen Ozarks where the air is colder than Vermont. Did we bring this weather with us? Maybe so because Mountain Man and I have received emails from the locals asking us to please depart and never return. Last time we were here was the worst winter in decades. Mountain Man assures me it is my fault because I talk non stop about missing the Northeast Kingdom.
Yesterday morning the temperature was in the single digits and the wind was howling. I was nestled under my comforter with K-Whip snuggled next to me. Mountain Man was snoring and stillness pervaded.
All of a sudden I hear “bark, bark, bark.” “Go back to sleep!” I tell my loud dogs. But “bark, bark, bark” continued so I thought I’d better look but there had darn well better be a reason. There was. Khrysta was doing laps around the house, stopping only momentarily to look in our window as she sailed past.
Still in my jammies, I pulled on coat and boots to capture my errant mare. No problem, she came right away and I proceeded to put her back in her pasture. “Not now, it’s not time to play yet.” I told her as she offered me a most engaging rear and wave of her leg.
I settled into bed once more, warming my extremities when again I hear “bark, bark, bark.” No, it can’t be but it was. Khrysta cirlcing the house bucking, rearing and feeling fine in the frigid weather. Once more, I put her in her pasture, shut and locked the gate, and headed home but this time, Khrysta didn’t wait until I’m back inside. No, she goes to a corner of the field and sails over the fence as if it were not there. If I hadn’t been so dang cold, I would have congratulated her on giving Grand Prix jumpers a run for their money.
Mountain Man and I spent the morning fortifying the fence line. Whew, by the time we finished, I was ready for a cup of cocoa and a good book. I was done for the day. But not Mountain Man. He decided he needed to gather wood. We heat with wood both here in the Ozarks and in Vermont but while wood gathering in Vermont is time consuming and hard work, Mountain Man does have modern conveniences (wood splitter and tractor) but here in the Ozarks, he relies on “Mountain Man Power.” Grumbling about “dang hay burners” and muttering about crazy horse people, my lumberjack set out on his mission.
We lost a beautiful, old oak tree in an ice storm last year and it is the source of our wood although Mountain Man has told me some of the wood is “punky.” And while I had visions of a tree with spiked branches, Mountain Man tells me it means rotten.
The outdoor boiler and the wheel barrow Mountain Man uses instead of a tractor.
Just getting started with Logan to help.
Toby thinks just perhaps it may be edible.
Mountain Man gets started. I wanted to photograph his arm muscles because they are buff but he drew the line at that.
Still a lot more of the old oak tree left to chop. Poor Mountain Man misses his hydraulics.
Then, back to work on the house.
I had lots of questions about the old porch. As it is now, the old porch is very narrow and in really bad shape and would be quite a task to save. But Mountain Man and I love porches and we plan to put an improved version on the new front entrance. At the moment, we’re still working out the details.
Stay warm everyone and thanks for visiting us.

I bet the loacls do want you to go home!!! Two of the worst winters they've had in a row…after you arrive? LOL
Seeing the pics of Mountain Man splitting logs the real way brings back memories. My dad would chop away. We had to trudge through the snow and carry it and pile it by the garage. Seemed like no matter how much we had done in the fall we always needed more.
stay warm!! When is your winter to warm up down there? Any good news in the forecast for ya?

we're having our first snow of the winter and though it's very minor – a few inches at most – the kids are crazy about it! I grew up in western upstate New York where snow was my friend (not just a driving hazard – ha). looks like you're having a good time there, but does it really get that cold??
take care!

Your horse sounds like my inlaw's dog! She LOVES it when it's cold. She'll run around, leaping and yapping like a puppy. If it ever snows (we're in Georgia) she's in heaven. Must be the half huskey in her
Stay warm! With all that wood, I know you will!

Porches sound lovely to sit on and enjoy the view. I want one. Can you send Mountain Man over when Spring comes to build me one? Pretty please! :O)

I had to laugh….I'll bet his muscles are buff! Terry would pull the line at that also.
I also had to smile at your horse…just think. She didn't leave, she just asked you to come play.

It was 1.8 degrees when I checked this morning around, 9:00 am. It's supposed to get up to 14 or 16 this afternoon:-) Being a Floridian, I've never experienced weather like this. Never saw REAL SNOW until I was over 50 years old. It's very lovely from inside…which is right where I'm staying!
So grateful for the gas fireplace in my daughters home…just flip a switch. I could do that at home, 'cept I don't have any logs in the gas fireplace. They've been on our list for the past 3 years, but other things keep bumping them down.
Love reading and seeing glimpses into your life. Thank you so much for sharing!

Your Mountain Man never seems to stop. Chops wood in the freezing cold, then heads back inside to work on his other projects. I'll bet he sleeps well at night. No wonder you'd like to sleep in mornings as well!

Goodness! You have a LOT more snow than we've had here in North Central Arkansas! But, I don't think you brought the weather with you. This whole arctic blast thing was probably forwarded to us by Canada! It won't be around for too long, then we'll be balmy again.

Hi, I thought you went there for the warm weather. I am really shocked how cold it has been. Is that normal? I thought it only dropped to the 60's..
It has be cold in New England, that is for sure!

I am gathering and carrying wood in as the new snow falls. I think we will have your frigid temperatures in a day or too, it has become a full time job to keep the house warm , I put some pictures on my blog of the snow tonight after I walked the dogs .Some how burning wood connects me to all the other people thru history that warmed themselves by the fire. stay cozy. xx

We've had a cold spell here in Florida…overnight temps in the low 30's. My neighbor's horses have been feeling frisky, too! Stay warm.

LOL – it seems as if most animals enjoy the extreme cold. My dog loves it too! Keep warm and cozy.

Yep, you're getting the blame for this. Not Mountain Man–just you!

We've had snow here too and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere any time soon. Seeing Mountain Man chopping that wood reminds me of the good old days when I was growing up
We heated with wood also and I used to love to help my dad bring the wood inside.
Have a great weekend and stay warm!

Brrr, just reading your post made me get goosebumps! But indoors, I'll bet you're as warm as toast! I love wood heat and I have a wood burning stove in my home, but I only burn wood when it gets really cold, which is not often here in Seattle. Right now it is 11:30 p.m. on January 9th and the temp outside is a balmy 40 degrees!
Ah, but your pictures of snow are pretty and your story about Khrysta is funny!

Krysta is so funny…and persistent!
And Mountain Man…he gets a morning workout like that, then comes inside to do major work on the house? I continually shake my head in wonder at the man of yours.
Stay warm.
