Hanging Out in The Hot Northeast Kingdom

Thank you everyone for your warm welcome for Cash.  He’s settling in nicely and I’m thrilled to have him here.

Mountain Man is perplexed by our recent weather.  Day after day of sunshine unbroken by clouds and temperatures that have soared into the 90s.  “What’s going on?” he keeps asking but whatever the reason, it’s been amazing weather to be outside.

Mountain Man has been completing the ceiling and the siding for our porch.  As always, surrounded by dogs.

I’ve been busy working in the greenhouse. I’m attempting to grow exhibition size pumpkins this year (over 800 pounds). I ordered special seeds, planted them and the next day they looked like this:

Reminds me of Jack and the Beanstalk and I can’t wait to share their progress with you.

But mostly, I’ve been at the barn teaching tricks. Before we start class, a run around the pasture is in order.

Next lesson, teach Khrysta and Cash to kiss.

And I’ve been working on teaching “roll over” to Cash.

But Khrysta is the expert and she decides to demonstrate the correct technique.

Time to learn “carry your own lead.”

School is over for the day. I hike to the top of the pasture, whistle and my small crew comes running.

Bliss and Cash outpace Khrysta. Yes, tiny Bliss is back with the horses and quite happy about it.

Cash practices his homework on Bliss. “This is how you kiss Miss Bliss.”

And I leave my sweet trio to head home where 7 dogs and my Mountain Man await.

I take one last look at my beautiful farm, breathe a deep sigh of contentment and I think about this incredible life I am privileged to live and I remember the brave men and women in uniform who made my freedom possible. There is no way to thank them enough.

Be careful! Looks like you’ll need to get those pumpkin plants in the ground by tomorrow! I am amazed at how much they grew overnight. Wow.

These mountains look as if they were made for horses. So lovely to see them running in the pasture. Maybe you can use those giant pumpkins to teach the little ones jumping :)

I love that Cash is settling in nicely…hm..Cash…made me think of Johnny Cash :) :) :) The mountain/country scenery was wonderfully breathtaking. The mountain ranges in particular remind me of Oregon. That’s the state where I live :) :) :) I live in teh city, but someday I’d love to live in the country :) :) This is great inspiration.

Thanks for writing this blog. it’s always entertaining and nice to read :) :) :) It give’s a girl reason to hope :) :) Have an awesome Memorial DAy weekend. I’m so thankful for our military who protect our freedoms …so we can enjoy blessings like this :) :) Greetings from Oregon :)

P.S. The weather here has been crazy…sun, rain, hailstorm, overcast.. We’ve had days where we get all four seasons in one hour. Crazy weather. However, the rain will be good. Summer is right around the corner. The rain should lesson the chance of forest fires.

Sara, yesterday was a 22 kilowatt day. The temperature was 88 and the low was 77 with 94% humidity. Oh yeah, Nebraska is known for its humidity. I’ve begun to keep track of the daily electrical consumption so that I will have a base line so I can see how improvements really affect the bottom line. The first thing that will be done is install a programmable thermostat. I’m not sure what will come next but I do know that the 45 year old windows are not too efficient. Then there is the back sliding glass door that leaks like a sieve. Forty five years ago no one cared about energy efficient anything because it was cheap. Now, not so much.

You always seem to have so much fun with your animals. They are the joy of your life, of course, right under Carl. I am glad to see that this season of life fits you so well and that you have totally moved into it.

No more bear? I guess Mountain Man won the stare down, huh.

Those pumpkin seeds are something else. Are they larger seeds to begin with? When at the Iowa State fair last year, I talked with a giant pumpkin grower. He said that he had main lined sugar water into the stem of the pumpkin with an IV to create more growth. I’m not sure if that made any difference or not, but he seemed to think so.

I think you stole our weather :) , because here it’s overcast and cold. It’s great to see Cash making himself comfortable at his new home. I look at these photos and can’t get over how blessed you truly are to live where you do. I thank you for sharing them, because I can just sit back and look at these pictures and imagine what it would be like to walk in those woods on a sunny summer day.
Have a great Memorial Day!

The weather is just beautiful here in San Francisco but I’m not having as much fun as you guys up there on your mountain! While you’re being the horse whisperer, I am glued to the computer, playing catch up. I need to shut this thing down, drive three miles to the beautiful Pacific, find myself a nice perch, open a bottle of wine, put some jazz on, and gaze at the sea!

At 65, I’ve done it! My poetry book – Life’s Journey by Carmen Henesy – is out on Amazon!
( Poems about the things that have been important to me in my journey through life, some humorous, some sad, some that may have meaning to you as well )

You really live the life there girlfriend! I’m excited about the giant pumpkins. What’s the biggest on record for Vermont? Can you beat it? I know ya”ll are hating that hot weather. I can’t stand it either. Don’t know why I couldn’t have been born where it’s cold. I gues it’s due to the fact my Father was born in Maine, didn’t like the cold so he came to Florida after WW II and met my Mother. The rest is history! Have a great Memorial Day with MM and furry friends!

Your little family just keeps on growing…beautifully! And the farm looks incredible. And those pumpkin seeds!!!!! You should do a day by day photo journal – I can’t wait to see those pumpkins.

The horse pictures are so cute, and your farm setting is looking gorgeous. I love the rolling hills.

Here in South Carolina it was rainy and in the 80′s today. Go figure…
