Dogs Just Want To Have Fun

Lately this blog has been all about horses and the dogs are asking for equal time.
I admit I’m missing the first big snowfall in Vermont but it’s a beautiful morning here, 40s and sunny and I didn’t want to mope so I took Logan, K-Whip and Alvin for a hike in one of the fields. The other dogs were much more interested in watching Mountain Man renovate the bedroom.
Logan encounters strange, round green objects in the woods. We don’t have these in Vermont and at first, Mountain Man and I thought they were some kind of man made lure for deer but we know what they are now. Do you?
Here’s a close up of one of them and I’ll give you a hint. We’ve only found them under trees.
Alvin decided he was going to be the leader.

Osage Oranges/ hedge apples. All wildlife loves them. So does most domestic stock. They are all sticky and gooey inside. We used to play baseball with them. If you hit a homerun, you got splattered with it. After curing, the trees make the best fence posts you can get. Enjoy the Ozarks!

I really miss being able to get out like that. It sounds (and looks) like you-all had a wonderful time. Those hedge apples are also good for clearing out roaches. So, if you've found any in your new/old house, gather up a bunch and scatter them where the roaches might be. Their wood also makes fantastic fence posts. For it are resistant to water and insect damage, and I have seen some that have supposedly been in the ground for over 40 years.

They look like apples aliens have left on the ground! Or maybe green toadstools with fur on them…
Love all the dog photos!

Looks like you all had a lovely walk.

Yep, those are hedge apples. They do make a mess when smushed!
Any idea what kind of skull you encountered?

From the first pic those green things looked like used up tennis balls…but I guess that would be weird for them to be in that field! Love that Logan looks after you. Isn't it amazing how they just do it without be asked or taught. Aahhh…the unconditional love of a dog!

Boy what I wouldn't give for a beautiful walk on the farm. Still we do have irrigation water in the making and it's warmed up to -7*.

Thanks for taking us along on your walk, I enjoy seeing different parts of the country. It looks like your 'kids' are enjoying those new woods and fields to explore. We had snow overnight here, in New England.

Hedge apples!! They are expensive in the store. We put them in our basement every fall to help keep spiders and such away! It makes a difference too!
We have been getting in lots of short runs the past couple days….running from the house to the car!! Too cold to walk!!

i'll be much obliged to send you some of our Montana snow if you'd like
… More time 's been spent snowhiking with Manker our B&B dog… rather than riding since highs have been registering in the negative column
happy warmer trails (tomorrow!)

Well, while you are out of Vermont, we got snow here in NH and VT. Almost a foot and then it has switched to rain at this point. No bare fields here for your dogs to roam.

It's very enjoyable to watch dogs having fun and playing. Love the pictures.

I liked seeing pictures of your dogs playing and romping in the field. Logan is very nice to come back to check up on you!

Wow what a lovely hike! I wish I could be there instead of here with all this snow and wind and cold!

We call them "hedgeballs", but I guess everyone else calls them "apples". My neighbor puts them in her crawl space to keep out spiders, but that may just be an old wives tale.
Fun walking with you!

I've never heard of hedge apples. Can you do anything with them? They looked like walnuts until you showed a closer view. If one of those lands on your head, you're in trouble. : )
Be well, hugs to the pups too!

I remember how blazing fast your whippet is from the video you posted a while back. Your walk looked lovely. I need a good walk. Somehow we have slipped out of walks since Wyatt is in kindergarten now. I miss them. Must reinstate somehow.
Hope you're well!!! Have a great weekend!
