I have tallied up the comments for June and the four people who are winning a gift certificate to the charity of their choice are; Karen Zemek, Anna, Sharkbytes and Carmen.
Karen chose a gift certificate to Kiva. She wrote about it on her blog today which you can read by clicking HERE. Anna chose a donation to The Red Cross to go wherever the need is greatest. Carmen hasn’t decided yet and I haven’t heard from Sharkbytes but when they decide, I’ll let you know. Anyway, the comments for charity begins a new month today. Here’s the rules:
Be one of the 4 top commentors on my blog and you will receive a 25.00 donation to the charity of your choice or a 25.00 gift certificate to Kiva.org. It was really close this month. I had 4 people tied for fourth place and Sharkbytes won by one comment. If I ever have a tie for fourth place, I will award every one who has tied a 25.00 gift certificate. I’m having a great time doing this and I hope you are enjoying it as well.
Now, to answer questions. Becky asked what the bird was in the last picture of my last post. It’s my fabulous toboganning, dancing turkey hen posing for the camera as she likes to do. But, most of the questions were about the geese.
I learned not all geese and ducks need big ponds to be happy. In fact, certain breeds such as Runner Ducks, actually prefer land. But, all geese and ducks need access to fresh water in amounts enough to duck (maybe that’s how they got their name?) their entire head and their beaks to clean their nostrils. And, yes, they do enjoy splashing and cleaning themselves in water. And fresh water has to be available to them all the time. (Not looking forward to those 25 below winter days here.)
We no longer have a pond on Red Pine Mountain. We did have a Mountain Man made one but when our property taxes started increasing by enormous amounts, the pond had to go. Yes, the pond was taxed as is everything, run in sheds, timber storage buildings. Doesn’t matter. If it stands on your land, Vermont taxes it. We also ripped down the majority of our house as well in an effort to be able to hold on to our farm. But let’s not think about property taxes or I’ll become depressed.
Back to geese.
We do have lots of water around us but because they are running streams that flow into larger rivers, I have no plans to allow the geese in the streams cause I don’t want them pooping in the water. We are building a larger enclosure and play yard for them and they will have access to kiddie pools.
The geese are not going to be allowed to free range. They are very vulnerable to predators because they can’t fly. I think they’ll be happy with their final accomodations when Mountain Man has them built. And if you’re thinking about adding geese to your homestead, just research the breeds and you’ll find your perfect match. I have to tell you they are lots of fun.
Now, on to my mystery birds. First up, the bird in the forefront of the picture. He’s very long legged and short bodied and remind me of gazelles or Emus. I can’t figure out his breed. Any ideas?

The other mystery bird is the one in the background. She is a very pale yellow, almost white and is larger than the other chicks her age. I thought she might be an Easter Egger but usually they have some shading. Thoughts anyone?
And lastly is this chick. An Easter Egger perhaps?

That’s it for today and maybe for the weekend; unless something arises that has nothing to do with geese or chickens. Happy 4th of July!

I don’t know what the leggy one is – best guess would be a Rumpless Araucauna male … the yellow one is an Ameraucana and the bluish one is a blue wyandotte. Those are my best guesses, anyway. We just had an Ameraucauna chick hatch that was all yellow – after two weeks it still is. I don’t know if it will make it, however, because it is a little underdeveloped. Here’s hoping!

That’s so nice of you to let your top 4 commenters choose a charity and I love that you told me about KIVA! I did a whole post about it when I got home from work today on my other blog: http://karen.pnn.com/articles/show/66821-lending-to-the-poor-and-feeling-good

I don’t know a blessed thing about birds, except that I like to eat chicken and turkey
Oh, the thought of a hen on a tobaggan is just too funny. I’m going to have to search your blog for that photo
I wish I could help identify your birds. Maybe if you type in some of their ch aracteristics into your search engine, it might bring up some images that will help you identify them. The last one has feathers that have an unusually beautiful blue/black tint to them.
Have a great 4th of July weekend
Love and hugs from Oregon, Heather

Goodness, I just wrote the LONGEST comment and it disappeared into the ozone!
I finally decided on where I would like my donation to go! he link for donations to EVAW ( Ending Violence Against Women
International ) is:http://www.evawintl.org/donationinfo.aspx
EVAW International is unique in that it is the only multi-disciplinary organization working to end violence against women by improving the criminal justice response so that more offenders are held accountable. Each and every day they receive requests for technical assistance from community professionals as well as survivors who are pleading for justice. Their goal is to train community professionals to respond appropriately to victims, so they get the help they need, while improving the law enforcement investigation and successful prosecution of these crimes.
During my 21 years as a sexual assault nurse examiner, EVAW was so important with their educational conferences for all the disciplines helping in the field of sexual assault and in thir response to victims themselves.
Though I am now retired, I am still a strong advocate against interpersonal violence, rape, and sexual abuse against children, women, AND men. These are seiously under reported crimes
and can have lifetime impact on victims.
Now, on to the more pleasant parts of life – such as the joy and beauty of Red Pine Mountain. How fun that you have unidentified fowl on the premises! Of course, I wouldn’t know what any of them are. Also, wouldn’t it be fun to add emus and ostriches to the mix – or would they be unwelcome because of their size and manners. Think about how many people one egg would feed? Do you leave all your eggs to be hatched or do you actually eat some of them?
Thank you so much for your generosity in made charitable donations for comments. You’re wonderful!

Hi Sara, please accept my apology for not having been around your blog lately. I’d like to say my reluctance to get on the computer is simply a case of lost motivation but I really think it’s been a touch of depression, as I’ve never felt so completely unmotivated before in my life. Don’t even want to go outside, go anywhere or do anything.
Hope it passes soon as I don’t want to try out any type of meds (they sometimes only make things worse).
I think your Comments for Charity is one of THE GREATEST ideas around and shows what a lovely and kind hearted soul you are.
As I made that little happy face I thought; “too bad I can’t do that with my own face right now”.
