Catching Up

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. It’s been a while since I blogged so where to begin? Right before the holiday, Mountain Man was in the Ozarks building a barn for my animals. We’re busy preparing for our exodus in March. We’re all going. A traveling Noah’s Ark headed to the heartland.

While he was away, I decided to move some minis to our front yard much to the delight of our Newfie who finally found some friends his size.

Beautiful unseasonably warm weather gave way to snow and on Thanksgiving morning, there was a foot of it.

Didn’t bother the geese who were out and about.

And if you have geese, you know they have to have lots of water. One of my bravest chickens decided to help me fill their pool. I have to tell you filling a pool in below freezing weather has become one of my least favorite chores.

But most of the chickens decided to stay in the coop and as a protest, they immediately stopped laying eggs. I told them they were Vermont chickens and this was only a brief preview of what was to come and they’d better get with the program. One of my Polish chickens decided to give it a try.

But the rest stayed put. Mountain Man has always told me a lot of people don’t keep birds over the winter here because of the cost of grain and I understand now because I went through 50 pounds of feed in 2 days thanks to the snow.

But the horses and donkeys are pros at winter life. And although they could have stayed put in their stalls, they preferred to be out and about.

Wasn’t long before the minis were involved in a game of chase.

Up and down; around and around. What a delight to watch them play.

On Thanksgiving sunset, the sky turned pink and I stayed outside until the last of the light disappeared from the sky marveling at the beauty of it all.

But within a couple of days, temperatures returned to above normal once again and the snow was gone. Blossom and I got to work training for liberty class which involves letting a horse do his/her thing to music. She’s a natural.

Chickens started free ranging again maybe looking for worms in all the new mud.

And it’s a good a thing Mountain Man is here because he discovered a family of mice had made its home in the air filter chamber of my car. Of course, chickens had to be involved too.

I guess our days are simple ones. I spend time with the animals, cleaning up after them, training them, loving them while Mountain Man stays busy on various projects. And while I can’t exactly say much is going on, the days fly by and it seems as though we are always busy.

So I’ll leave you with a picture of my growing peacock and wish you all a happy weekend.

Thanks so much for visiting us. How were your holidays?

I enjoy reading your blog. It is wonderful how you obviously enjoy the animals and country life. When you move to the Ozarks it will be more like our southern WV world. Thanks for the stories.

Our Thanksgiving was quiet and laden with football and thanks, with not a whole lot of food or family. My daughter was here to watch the Packers and Lions play.

Your chickens make me laugh too. But I could just imagine the fun of watching the horses enjoy the snow.

Oh, it was good to hear from you, Sara!! I loved seeing the photos of your gang–I certainly miss hearing about them all.

I just learned that chickens like to eat mice–were they waiting for a snack?

Will you be bringing everyone (all the birds too) to the Ozarks? Are you gonna build an ark-mobile??? I can’t imagine that feat. I’m sure Mtn Man is thrilled with the prospect of that trip.

I linked you yesterday–did you see?

Sara, it’s good to see you back blogging again. I was beginning to wonder. You do have some really gorgeous pictures in this post. Missouri has a lot to offer as well. Once you get moved and settled in, I expect you will have a great time with your animals and birds. They just might like the warmer weather with shorter winters. We are supposed to get rain, then freezing rain, and finish the whole mess with three to six inches of snow. Yea!! I supposed to be fixing a dryer for my Mother-in-law’s friend in the middle of that mess. Hopefully, I won’t have to drive around much.

I pray that you are feeling better both physically and emotionally. The Lord sustains us during our down times if we lean on Him.
