Can You See It?

After spending days around the house, held hostage by my oppressive captor, I decided to brave the humidity and head into the woods. It wasn’t as bad as I expected.

A canopy of green surrounded us.
Puddles provided further cooling.
And ancient trees helped to block the sun.
The forest was filled with beauty. Fungus growing on fallen logs.
Berries growing on wild vines.
Wild flowers adorning flowing streams.
And look very closely. Do you see it? The imprint of a giant leaf within the bark of this tree?
But what is this? Can it be? The leaves are starting to change.
Yes, fall is coming. Look at the trees.
Just a hint of color but it’s started.
Back at the farm, there are changes too.
Not much longer now. Yes, I think I’ll stop complaining and just enjoy these last few days of summer. Fall is on the way.

We are seeing signs of an early fall—-the milk weed blooms and set silks a month or so early. (The silk is flying now.) The yellow sticker weed ( I don’t know it’s name…bloomed in July, instead of August, and the cattails are full fat and ready to burst.

The Mourning Doves have left and most of the song birds…I haven't seen a robin for some time now.

I dread winter, winter/spring was so long (it just lasted and lasted and lasted) that we are really only now experiencing summer. We have not YET turned on the swamp cooler.

Yep, I do agree with you…it maybe an early winter and a long one to boot.

It's always cooler and leafier and much more pleasant in the woods. There is something very soothing and comforting about nature…

Sigh. If you could see me, you'd see that I am sitting with my chin in my hand, leaning toward the computer, gazing longingly at your woods…and the puddles…and the turning leaves…and the green coolness.

I love your new header pic – those leaves are so beautiful even though I have to see them changing already. If it has to come, at least we have the beautiful colors to help us slide towards winter. All of your picture are gorgeous!

I can't believe you're getting autumn signs so early!!! My ornamental pear tree, here in California, is often JUST turning color by the time Thanksgiving comes. Wow. What does this mean? Are you in for a long, hard winter? What does Mountain Man do when you're all snowed in? Is this why he works so hard between the snows?

I love Fall, but being that summer hasn't really ever arrived here, I want to postpone it a bit. Can you tell it to hold off a little for me, please??

NOOOOO! Not yet! At least our leaves aren't changing color yet. It's only August! I don't like fall because that means winter is on the way and I really HATE winter!

Your woods are beautiful! They remind me so much of the woods surrounding the homestead in Nova Scotia where my grandfather was born.
