A Quiet Holiday

Thanks everyone for your chick advice. I checked out the links and I’ve read some books and I’m happy to say the chicks are thriving. They are starting to scoot around their pen and try out their wings which means I’ll be moving them to bigger quarters in a few days.
Can you tell they’ve grown?

I’ve discovered turkeys are very intelligent and friendly. They always walk over to greet me and look me straight in the eye. They are so different from the other chicks and I’m starting to rethink my Thanksgiving dinner plans.

I’ve also learned chicks consume large quantities of water which must be changed frequently.

I’ll keep you updated as they continue to grow.
Mountain Man is still away which meant a quiet day at home for me and what better way to spend it than watching clouds. Yesterday, at dawn, a thick mist covered the ground.

And when it lifted, the day was hot but the evenings are so gorgeous. Pink clouds suffuse the sky.

And form unusual shapes.

I tuck horses into stalls so the sound of fireworks won’t scare them and leave them happily munching hay.

One last look at pink skies.

I return to my waiting dogs thankful I have the freedom to live my life on our farm. I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday.

One of my hens is sitting on some eggs, so I am hoping for some chicks soon. Hope they’re not all duds she’s on…. :O)

I’m so glad things are going well with the chicks! I know they are cute now…but once they start getting big, loud and slightly aggressive, you might change your mind about dinner…or not (I wouldn’t either, lol).
Hope everything continues to go well

I was raised on a farm as a kid, so I understand how you feel about living out in the country. I couldn’t do it now as I don’t want to have to tend to animals everyday. I like to pack and go, but I understand that love of the land.
Have a terrific day.

I am a veggie, but I could never eat anything I kept as a pet! Lot’s of Thanksgiving ideas out there other than turkey!!
Did you tell MM about the chicks yet??
Have a great day! xo, misha

my turkey babies are doing well too thanks to your advice. The scattered food on the floor of the box worked well. As soon as I make sure both of the poults are eating and drinking(the runt is giving me a little worry) I will move them to a larger pen outside.

You sure have the adventures when moutain man leave town. Who said that living out in the country is boring? I’m glad you knew what could be done with the little peeps. I can remember when the chickens came home from the farm feed store in the boxes as you describe. I thought it quite interesting that they still come the same way 50 years later.
I spent the 4th watching a parade, eating BBQ burgers with lots of side dishes, watching city fireworks display, eating smores, shooting off fireworks, and crashing until morning. On the 5th breakfast at noon, shopping for bike training wheels, to the theatre for Toy Story 3, and home for supper. Who says Urban living is boring? Life is good if don’t weaken

My yes, your little brood is getting bigger, they seem to grow like weeds.
The turkey chicks are just darling but I know they lose that sweet cuddly look as they mature. I have heard that turkeys are very intelligent birds, unfortunately I doubt that Tofu would catch on for our Thanksgiving Day feast.

Those chicks are certainly getting bigger. The photos of your farm are stunning, as usual. The last one could be used as a postcard. I hope you had a great holiday.

Glad all the chicks are doings well…turkey chicks are really cute
I think they’re acting extra cute so they won’t get turned into Thanksgiving dinner
Maybe you could give at least one the presidential pardon?
so cool!!!…I love your photos as always…and it looks like you took good care of all the animals over the 4th of July weekend.
If you go over to my blog, there’s a button for Prairie Flower Farm. Linda is an awesome lady and she’d recently posted some shots of the pink sky over her homestate
